The Hunger Relief Organization says that malnutrition treatment centres in Helmand province no longer have the capacity to accept new patients.
The organization’s director, Kobe Rietveld, said after his visit to Helmand that the malnutrition treatment centre in Lashkar Gah, which was originally established for 45 children, was expanded to 70 beds due to rising demand. However, this additional capacity was also filled within just a few hours.
According to him, poverty, displacement, climate change, and reduced funding for humanitarian aid have further deepened the hunger and malnutrition crisis in Afghanistan.
The Hunger Relief Organization has called on international donors to provide urgent financial support to sustain nutrition and humanitarian assistance programmes in Afghanistan, ensuring that efforts to address the growing malnutrition crisis do not come to a halt.
