Masoud Pezeshkian, President of Iran, met and held talks on Friday, 12 Saratan, on the sidelines of the funeral ceremony of Ali Khamenei, the former leader of the Islamic Republic, in Tehran, with Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs of the Taliban. So far, neither side has released details regarding the main topics of the meeting.
The Iranian Presidential Office confirmed the meeting by publishing images of the encounter but did not provide any explanation regarding the content of the discussions or the issues raised.
Abdul Ghani Baradar and Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s Foreign Minister, traveled to Tehran to attend the ceremony honoring the former leader of the Islamic Republic and participated in the event.
Amir Khan Muttaqi had also met the Iranian Foreign Minister a day earlier and discussed matters of mutual interest. However, details of that meeting have also not been officially disclosed.
At the same time as the Taliban delegation’s presence in Tehran, a number of prominent anti-Taliban figures, including Ahmad Massoud and Mohammad Mohaqiq, are also present in the Iranian capital.
Despite the simultaneous presence of Taliban officials and leaders of certain opposition factions in Tehran, there have been no official reports suggesting any direct meeting or dialogue between the two sides.
