Iranian authorities have temporarily released Narges Mohammadi, a human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, due to the deterioration of her health.
Narges Mohammadi, who was imprisoned in Zanjan prison in Iran, suffered two heart attacks in recent days. Her supporters had warned that if she did not receive urgent medical care, her life would be at serious risk.
The foundation associated with Narges Mohammadi stated in a press release that she was transferred from Zanjan to Tehran by ambulance to receive treatment under the supervision of a specialized medical team.
Her husband, Taghi Rahmani, who currently lives in Paris, said that a temporary release is not enough and emphasized that Narges should not be returned to the prison where her health had been compromised.
The 54-year-old Narges Mohammadi still has a significant portion of her long prison sentence remaining. She has spent most of the past twenty years in prison due to her fight for human rights, opposition to mandatory hijab for women, and activism against the death penalty.
In 2023, she received the Nobel Peace Prize for her human rights work, but she was unable to attend the award ceremony due to imprisonment. Her two children accepted the prize on her behalf in Norway.
