Shakib Ahmad Nazari, an NTv Japan journalist based in Kabul, has been released from Taliban custody after 13 months in prison.
A friend of Nazari confirmed that the journalist was released from Bagram prison today (Tuesday, September 1) and reunited with his family.
Nazari was arrested in Kabul on July 24, 2025, by officials from the Taliban’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.
The Taliban accused him of cooperating with a foreign media outlet and of “propaganda against the regime.” The group also released what it described as his confessions, which were reportedly obtained under duress.
He was initially held at a detention facility run by the Taliban’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, before being transferred to the group’s intelligence detention facility and later to Bagram prison.
Since retaking control of Afghanistan, the Taliban have repeatedly arrested and detained journalists.
The group has also imposed sweeping restrictions on media activities and shut down the offices of several media outlets.
