Local sources in Badakhshan Province say that the Taliban have arrested a former military personnel and several local residents following an armed attack on one of their border outposts in Khwahan district. According to the sources, the arrests were made after an attack early this morning targeted a Taliban border battalion.
According to information provided by the sources, the detained former serviceman has been identified as Jahangir Rahmani, a native resident of Khwahan district. The Taliban have accused him of involvement in the attack on their border battalion.
Sources say that Jahangir Rahmani served as a police officer in Badakhshan Province during the previous republican government. According to his relatives, after the Taliban returned to power, Rahmani had no ties with any political or armed group opposed to the Taliban and had been engaged in personal work in recent years.
Earlier this morning, several media outlets, citing local sources, reported that a Taliban border battalion in Khwahan district had come under a rocket attack. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, and the Taliban have not issued any official statement regarding the details of the incident.
Local sources also say that the Taliban have detained several other civilians in Khwahan district following the incident. The exact number of detainees and their current condition remain unknown.
Badakhshan Province has witnessed several security developments in recent weeks. Local sources say that internal tensions within the Taliban and an increase in armed clashes have created security challenges in the province.
According to published reports, following disagreements involving Jumakhan Fateh, a local Taliban commander, which continued for about a month, Yiftal-e Payin district near the provincial capital of Badakhshan fell to the National Mobilization Front two days ago. The reports indicate that the Taliban have sent their army chief from Kabul to Badakhshan to retake control of the district.
