Former Local Police Commander Reportedly Rearrested by Taliban Intelligence in Laghman

Local sources in Afghanistan’s Laghman province say Taliban intelligence has rearrested Mohammad Azam Bakhtar Farashghani, a former local police commander in Dawlat Shah district. According to the sources, Taliban forces also assaulted members of his family during the arrest.

The sources said on Friday, June 26, that Farashghani was taken to an undisclosed location following his detention. They added that his family has so far received no information about his whereabouts or condition.

According to the sources, Taliban intelligence operatives allegedly planted explosives, weapons, and ammunition near the former commander’s home on June 24 before raiding the house. The sources claim the Taliban used the alleged discovery of these materials as grounds for his arrest.

The sources further alleged that Taliban intelligence has adopted new tactics to detain members of the former Afghan government’s security forces. They said planting landmines, weapons, and ammunition near the homes of former military personnel before arresting them has become one of the methods used in what they describe as retaliatory actions.

Farashghani had previously been detained by Taliban intelligence and was released after spending a period in custody.

The Taliban have not yet issued an official statement regarding these allegations or the reported rearrest of the former local police commander.
