The Czech Republic and South Africa played out a 1–1 draw in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group A encounter, with South Africa securing a late equalizer from the penalty spot.
The Czech Republic made the stronger start and took the lead in the sixth minute through Michal Sadílek, finishing the first half with a 1–0 advantage.
After their early breakthrough, the Czechs controlled much of the match for an extended period. However, they came under increasing pressure in the second half and were ultimately unable to preserve their lead.
South Africa delivered an improved performance after the break and was awarded a penalty in the 83rd minute. Teboho Mokoena converted from the spot to level the score at 1–1.
Both sides pushed for a winning goal in the closing stages, but neither was able to find the net again, and the match ended in a draw.
The result earned each team a point, leaving qualification from Group A to be decided in the upcoming fixtures.
The match also attracted attention for its officiating, as it was overseen by an all-female refereeing team. American referee Tori Penso, assisted by Kathryn Nesbitt and Brooke Mayo, took charge of the gam marking only the second time in the history of the FIFA Men’s World Cup that a match has been officiated by a female refereeing team.
