The Taliban have announced that a five-year electricity development plan has been approved by the group’s leader, Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Taliban’s Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs said the plan includes dozens of power generation projects based on domestic energy sources, including hydropower, solar energy, wind power, and coal.
According to the Taliban, the program also encompasses the expansion of electricity transmission lines, the construction of substations, and the extension of power distribution networks.
The Taliban said the implementation of the plan could reduce Afghanistan’s dependence on imported electricity and help strengthen the country’s energy sector.
The announcement comes as Afghanistan continues to face chronic electricity shortages and significant challenges in its energy infrastructure, with a substantial portion of its electricity demand still being met through imports from neighboring countries.
