Taliban officials in Helmand say that 12,468 kilograms of smuggled human and agricultural medicines, which had been seized by the province’s sub-customs offices, were destroyed by burning in the Safar area of Garmsir district following a court order.
The Taliban’s Helmand Department of Information and Culture stated in a press release on Wednesday (17 Saratan) that the smuggled items had been brought into Afghanistan from a neighboring country over the past two months, but it did not identify the country of origin or exporter.
According to the statement, the medicines were destroyed in Garmsir district today based on a court decision.
Although the Taliban have not provided details about the original source of the smuggled medicines, similar illegal shipments had previously been brought into Afghanistan from Pakistan through Helmand’s Bahramcha route.
Haqmal, head of Helmand’s sub-customs offices, said that no one would be allowed to illegally import goods into the country or smuggle items out of it.
This comes as formal trade between Afghanistan and Pakistan has faced disruptions for nearly a year, prompting some individuals to attempt transporting essential goods between the two countries through illegal smuggling routes.
