Hibatullah Akhundzada: Without knowledge, a person cannot live in this world.
Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban’s leader, emphasized the importance of knowledge during a meeting with religious scholars and officials from the Taliban’s religious and jihadist schools in Kandahar, describing education and knowledge as means of progress and achieving a better life.
Speaking at the meeting, he said: “Without knowledge, a person cannot live in this world.” Akhundzada also emphasized the role of knowledge in human life but did not provide further details about his views on education and learning.
His remarks come as, according to figures from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), approximately 2.4 million girls above the sixth grade are currently deprived of education in Afghanistan.
The Taliban have also banned women and girls from continuing their education at universities and have restricted medical education for women and girls. These restrictions have limited their access to higher education and certain specialized fields of study.
