According to local sources, Fasihuddin Fitrat, the Taliban’s Chief of Army Staff, arrested and physically assaulted a number of young people during his latest visit to Badakhshan on allegations of involvement in an uprising.
Sources said that Fitrat traveled to Badakhshan at a time when anti-Taliban forces claimed on Friday that they had captured Yaftal district of the province.
The sources added that Yaftal district remains outside Taliban control and that the Taliban have so far been unable to retake it. According to the sources, due to this situation, the Taliban have carried out the arrest and torture of a number of local residents and young people in the area whom they describe as innocent, and have also published their images and personal information.
Furthermore, according to sources, reports have emerged of anti-Taliban armed movements in various districts of Badakhshan province. However, no independent and verified information regarding these claims has been released so far.
