The Taliban’s chief of army staff, Fasiuddin Fetrat, has traveled to Nusay district in Badakhshan to hold talks with the group’s dissatisfied commander, Jumma Khan Fateh.
According to sources, efforts to reach an agreement between the two sides have been underway for the past three days, but have so far yielded no results. Reports indicate that mutual distrust is considered the biggest obstacle to progress in the negotiations.
Jumma Khan Fateh, whose differences with the Taliban have intensified, has expressed skepticism about the ongoing talks and described the process as a “trap.”
The development comes days after Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi said that the group’s opponents were not at a level that warranted negotiations with them.
Meanwhile, the dispute over mining revenues and control of mines in Badakhshan has escalated, with reports indicating that clashes and tensions have spread to five districts.
The Taliban have so far released no official or comprehensive details regarding the negotiations or the widening scope of the conflict.
