Summary

Russia and Ukraine have agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war each with the other side; an action that is part of a three-day ceasefire agreement between the two countries, which has now entered the implementation phase.

Earlier, Russia had called for a temporary ceasefire to coincide with the annual commemoration of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II, a ceremony held every year with high-ranking officials in Moscow’s Red Square.

Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, announced that he had instructed the Ukrainian armed forces not to carry out any attacks on Red Square in Moscow during the ceremony.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump had previously stated that the ceasefire agreement between the two countries came at his request. He emphasized that this ceasefire would include the suspension of all military activities as well as the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side.

Shortly after these statements, Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed Ukraine’s participation in the plan, and Russian state media reported that Moscow had agreed to the proposal.

Despite the announced agreement, Russian and Ukrainian officials had previously accused each other of continuing attacks. Additionally, the mayor of Moscow reported nighttime drone attacks on the city.

In his message, Donald Trump welcomed the agreement, stating that he personally sought the implementation of the three-day ceasefire and expressed gratitude to Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky for their agreement.
