The Torkham Market in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar Province, which was destroyed in a fire during clashes between the Taliban and Pakistani forces more than five months ago, has reopened to traders and customers following reconstruction.
According to shopkeepers, most of the stores that were damaged during the fighting have been rebuilt, and business activities have resumed. They have urged the public to support traders affected by the conflict by purchasing goods from the market.
Officials from the Taliban-run municipal administration in Torkham have also pledged their support to shopkeepers, stating that they will provide the necessary facilities to help restore the market’s normal operations.
The market was set ablaze during clashes between the Taliban and Pakistani forces in early March this year. According to local shopkeepers, more than 150 shops were destroyed in the fighting, resulting in financial losses estimated at around 300 million Afghanis.
