British police have announced that at least one person has been killed and around 90 others injured following a collision between two passenger trains in Bedford, approximately 60 kilometers north of London.
In a statement, British police said the incident occurred at around 5:15 p.m. on Friday (20 June).
According to the police, one person died at the scene following the collision, while 11 people sustained very serious injuries, 22 suffered serious injuries, and 56 others were lightly injured.
Following the incident, emergency response teams, including ambulances, helicopters, and fire services, were deployed to the scene, and rescue operations continued for more than three hours.
One passenger told the media that the collision happened “without any warning” and felt like “the explosion of a bomb.”
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued a statement expressing gratitude to emergency services and responders, and said he was thinking of the family of the deceased and those injured in the incident.
The exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
