Summary

Local sources in Kabul say that a man set himself on fire on Tuesday, May 19, near the airport road in protest against unemployment and poverty.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident took place in Kabul’s District 10, near the third phase of Arya Township. Witnesses said the man introduced himself as a graduate of Kabul’s Faculty of Engineering and stated that despite applying to various institutions, he had been unable to find a job.

Based on eyewitness accounts, the man complained about poverty, unemployment, and economic pressure before the incident, saying he could no longer bear returning home and facing his family.

Local sources said residents of the area managed to extinguish the fire and save the man. According to them, the citizen suffered severe burns, and after people contacted emergency services, an ambulance from Sheikh Zayed Hospital transferred him to the hospital. So far, no precise details about his identity or medical condition have been released.

Images published from the scene show a man with parts of his body severely burned while a number of people gathered around him. In the images, some individuals can be seen carrying barrels of water to put out the fire.

If you or someone you know is experiencing severe hopelessness or thoughts of self-harm, talking to a trusted person, counselor, or mental health professional can help. In Afghanistan, support is also available by calling 119 for assistance.
