A total of 2.3 million Afghanis has been stolen from Herat Regional Hospital.
Sources say hospital staff discovered the theft on Saturday morning after finding that the hard drives containing footage from the security cameras in the administrative and accounting offices had been removed.
According to preliminary investigations, the perpetrators separately entered the offices of the hospital’s administrative manager and accounting manager and took the hard drives from the security camera systems in both offices.
According to sources, the perpetrators then opened the safe using a key and took the money inside. There were no visible signs of forced entry or damage to the safe.
One source said the stolen money had been collected from hospital fees and other revenues.
Following the discovery of the theft, Taliban personnel went to the hospital and took nearly all employees of the accounting department’s cash-handling section, along with the workers responsible for cleaning and other services in that section, to the intelligence authorities.
