Summary

Ahmad Massoud, leader of the National Resistance Front (NRF), said Afghanistan needs a political system in which no ethnic group, religious community, or political movement considers itself the owner of the country. Instead, he said, Afghanistan should be a shared homeland for all its citizens, with everyone enjoying an equal role in determining the country’s future.

Speaking at an online ceremony on Friday marking the anniversary of the late Sayed Hussain Anwari, Massoud said Afghanistan’s path to recovery begins with restoring the people’s will and their right to make decisions. He described this as a shared demand of all ethnic groups, religious communities, political movements, and citizens.

Massoud described Afghanistan’s current situation as critical, adding that the country needs a legitimate and accountable government founded on justice, mutual respect, national unity, and the participation of all ethnic groups, religious communities, and cultures.

He said the objective of a future political system should be to ensure that girls can attend school, young people have hope for the future, and no citizen faces discrimination, imprisonment, or deprivation because of their ethnicity, language, beliefs, or political views.

Rejecting the notion that the alternative to the Taliban is a single individual, Massoud said the alternative is a political process. He said this process would pave the way for the establishment of a legitimate and broadly accepted government through the formation of a transitional administration, the drafting of a constitution, the convening of a Loya Jirga, and the holding of free elections.
