Summary

Ali Maisam Nazary, spokesperson for the anti-Taliban “Resistance Front,” welcomed the recent resolution of the European Parliament and said the move sends a clear and moral message against efforts to legitimize Taliban rule, particularly regarding the situation of Afghan women and girls.

Nazary expressed gratitude for the position taken by the vice president and members of the European Parliament, describing their stance against the “normalization of a terrorist group” as principled and courageous.

In a post on X, he wrote that the European Parliament’s recent resolution which condemns the Taliban’s systematic oppression, terrorism, and persecution of Afghans, especially women and girls sends an “important and morally clear message” to the international community.

According to him, while some actors are attempting to create legitimacy for the Taliban regime under the name of pragmatic engagement, the European Parliament has made it clear that universal values and fundamental human rights must not be sacrificed for political expediency.

Nazary stressed that any engagement with the Taliban beyond limited technical necessities could, in his words, grant legitimacy to “a group responsible for crimes against humanity, gender apartheid, and the destruction of Afghanistan’s civil and democratic institutions.”

He also welcomed the European Parliament’s support for Afghanistan’s democratic opposition and the Afghan people, stating that Afghans should not be abandoned to extremism and authoritarianism because of silence and indifference.
