Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ordered that Imran Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and former prime minister of Pakistan, be transferred to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for medical treatment. However, the government has opposed the court’s decision.
A three-member bench of the Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered Khan’s transfer to the hospital for treatment after hearing a case concerning his health and access to him.
The court also ordered the formation of a medical board to assess Imran Khan’s health and directed that, following his transfer to the hospital, his personal physician, Dr. Faisal, and his sister, Uzma Khan, be allowed to remain with him.
The Supreme Court also directed PTI and Imran Khan’s family not to hold any meetings or gatherings at Shifa Hospital during his transfer and treatment.
The court adjourned the hearing until September 16 and requested a comprehensive report on Imran Khan’s medical condition.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision and called for the immediate transfer of its founder to the hospital.
However, Pakistan’s Law Minister, Azam Nazeer Tarar, said the government would challenge the decision to transfer Imran Khan to a private hospital and would ask the Supreme Court to reconsider its ruling.
Tarar insisted that Imran Khan’s medical examination and treatment should be carried out at a government hospital.
