Local sources within the Taliban’s security command in Kunar province report that the wife of a Taliban member drowned in the Kunar River, and that search operations for her body have continued for several hours.
According to the sources, the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, 14 Saratan, in Asadabad, the provincial capital of Kunar. They added that rescue teams and local residents have so far been unable to recover the woman’s body despite ongoing efforts.
In a separate incident, a young man also drowned while entering a river in the Ghaziabad district of Kunar province. Sources say that after a search operation, his body was recovered from the water and handed over to his family.
Local Taliban authorities in Kunar have not yet issued any official statement regarding these two incidents, and no further details have been released about the circumstances surrounding them.
These incidents come as rising temperatures have led to an increase in drowning cases in rivers, dams, and other water sources across various parts of Afghanistan. A lack of rescue facilities, inadequate safety measures, and insufficient public awareness are cited as key factors contributing to drowning-related fatalities in the country.
According to Taliban disaster management authorities, at least 75 people have died due to drowning in Afghanistan during the first two and a half months of the current year alone, indicating an average of one drowning death per day in the country.
