Some European representatives, including members of the European Parliament, have called for stopping a Taliban delegation’s trip to Brussels. The request was raised in response to the possible invitation of Taliban representatives by the European Commission. The issue of this visit has become controversial within the political atmosphere of the European Union.
Pina Picierno, Vice-President of the European Parliament, said in response that any agreement or official engagement with the Taliban could be interpreted as recognition of the group. She stressed that the Taliban is accused of violating women’s rights and committing acts that some organizations have described as “crimes against humanity.”
According to several members of the European Parliament, there is currently opposition to any normalization of relations with the Taliban. They emphasized that such actions should be undertaken only after careful consideration of their legal and political consequences. These views have been expressed within the framework of ongoing debates about European Union policy.
