Several explosive devices detonated near a hotel in Damascus, the Syrian capital, on Tuesday, coinciding with French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Syria. According to Reuters, citing a security source, the explosions occurred near the hotel where the French president was expected to stay.
Following the blasts, security forces sealed off roads leading to the area and implemented heightened security measures around the site. No reports of casualties or damage had been released at the time of publication.
A Reuters journalist at the scene reported hearing several explosions. Syrian authorities had not yet provided further details regarding the cause of the blasts or those responsible.
Emmanuel Macron is the first prominent European Union leader to visit Damascus since the overthrow of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
During the visit, President Macron met with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa in Damascus for talks.
