Summary

Former Afghan parliamentarian Fawzia Koofi has strongly criticized the policies of the Taliban, saying that the group’s rule over the past five years has subjected Afghan women’s lives to severe restrictions and describing the current situation in the country as a “dark period” in Afghanistan’s contemporary history.

Koofi wrote on her X account on Tuesday (23 Saratan) that Afghanistan is under the control of a group that, in her view, has neither legitimacy nor the ability to represent the people.

She stated that under Taliban rule, the talents, experiences, and leadership abilities of Afghan women have been ignored, and that women have been deprived of their fundamental rights simply because they are Afghan citizens.

She questioned why Afghan women are required to seek permission or request participation in international forums, while women from other Islamic countries formally represent their governments at such gatherings.

Fawzia Koofi also criticized those who provide justifications for the current situation. She said that remaining silent in the face of the exclusion of women and the humiliation of a nation is shameful, and that this situation must change in order to save the country.

She held the Taliban responsible for what she called this “dark chapter” in Afghanistan’s contemporary history, adding that after the end of Taliban rule, years of efforts would be required to address the economic, social, political, and cultural damages that, according to her, have been imposed on Afghan women.

Meanwhile, the Taliban have repeatedly stated that all rights of women in Afghanistan are protected in accordance with Islamic Sharia and have rejected criticisms and allegations regarding women’s rights.
