Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has stated that if the United States betrays Iran in any potential agreement, Tehran is fully prepared to defend itself. He made the remarks during a meeting with Ahmad Moazani, Speaker of the Indonesian Parliament.
Ghalibaf said that ending the war is a major priority for many countries around the world; however, he stressed that the conflict would never end through Iran’s surrender. According to him, Iran will never abandon the defense of its territory or the rights of its people and will respond firmly to any possible violation of commitments by the United States.
The remarks come as U.S. President Donald Trump has said that Washington has accepted Iran’s request to continue negotiations, while at the same time emphasizing that the ceasefire between the two countries has ended.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Qatari mediators have traveled to Iran in an effort to reduce tensions and facilitate the resumption of talks between Tehran and Washington.
Relations between the United States and Iran have become increasingly strained after three rounds of indirect talks in Geneva and direct negotiations in Islamabad ended without an agreement. The United States has called for the closure of Iran’s nuclear facilities at Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan, while Iran has rejected demands to reduce uranium enrichment levels to zero. These disagreements have further intensified the political and military tensions between the two sides.
