The Iranian Ministry of Justice has announced that it has handed over 162 Afghan prisoners to the judicial authorities of the Taliban.
According to a statement from the ministry, these prisoners were transferred following the implementation of a formal agreement between Iran and Afghanistan on the transfer of convicted prisoners.
The statement adds that most of these individuals had been convicted of drug trafficking and related offenses, and they will serve the remainder of their sentences in prisons under Taliban administration in Afghanistan.
It further notes that such prisoner exchange measures between the two countries have taken place before, and their purpose is to repatriate convicted citizens to their home countries and facilitate improved conditions for serving prison sentences.
