Ali Maisam Nazary, head of foreign relations for Afghanistan’s National Resistance Front, has criticized recent remarks by Ayesha Wahab, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, regarding the Taliban, calling for closer scrutiny and oversight of her political activities.
In a post on Facebook, Nazary said that Wahab expressed views in an interview with a U.S. television network that, in his view, could be interpreted as support for normalizing relations with the Taliban.
The National Resistance Front’s foreign relations chief also alleged that Wahab described opponents of the Taliban as “power-hungry warlords,” arguing that such a position downplays the efforts of those opposing the group.
In another part of his post, Nazary referred to Wahab’s family background and the political and intellectual environment in which she grew up, alleging that some of her current views reflect ethnic bias and political extremism. Neither Wahab nor her office has responded to these allegations in the text at hand.
He also accused Ayesha Wahab of using her Afghan heritage and identity to strengthen her political standing while, he claimed, failing to adequately support the demands of the Afghan people, particularly women and girls living under Taliban rule.
Nazary stressed that no politician should use the identity and suffering of a country’s people to gain political credibility while simultaneously attacking those who resist what he described as “oppression.”
The National Resistance Front’s foreign relations chief added that Wahab’s views may currently be held by relatively influential political circles within the U.S. Congress, but argued that examining these positions now is important to prevent such narratives from gaining greater influence.
Nazary went on to compare the current situation with the record of Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation, saying that the United States had previously witnessed the influence of an Afghan-American figure at the highest levels of policymaking someone whose policies, in his view, had negative consequences for Afghanistan.
Referring to Khalilzad, he added that a political figure should not be dismissed simply because their influence is currently limited, and stressed that Wahab’s record, statements, affiliations, and political positions should be subjected to public scrutiny.
The remarks came after Ayesha Wahab said that the United States should strengthen its engagement with the Taliban. Critics of the Taliban have compared this position with approaches previously advocated regarding U.S. engagement with the group.
Ayesha Wahab, an Afghan-born American politician, recently entered the U.S. House of Representatives on an interim basis. Following her arrival in Congress, several Afghan political figures, including Hamid Karzai and Zalmay Khalilzad, welcomed her and congratulated her on her appointment.
Wahab’s views on how the United States should engage with the Taliban have drawn mixed reactions, with several Afghan political groups, including opponents of the Taliban, criticizing her position.
