Marc Botenga, a Belgian representative in the European Parliament, strongly criticized the invitation of Taliban representatives to Brussels and the establishment of relations with them, calling it contrary to the declared values of the European Union.
He stated that while the European Union avoids high-level contacts with Russia due to human rights concerns and political disagreements, the Taliban are being given a “red carpet” welcome, which he described as a contradictory and double-standard approach.
Botenga warned that handing Afghan migrants over to the Taliban is “playing with human lives” and could put the lives of many Afghans at serious risk.
According to him, the human rights situation in Afghanistan especially the rights of women and girls remains a matter of grave international concern, and European countries should avoid any form of carelessness in this regard.
These remarks come at a time when meetings and contacts between some European officials and Taliban representatives have increased in recent months, sparking widespread political reactions both inside and outside Europe.
