Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev says that his country is committed to continuing a “constructive, balanced, and multifaceted” policy toward Afghanistan. He described Afghanistan as a close neighbor of Uzbekistan and emphasized that Tashkent will continue its engagement with Kabul and regional cooperation.
Speaking at the ceremony marking the 35th anniversary of Uzbekistan’s independence, Mirziyoyev said that Tashkent has not yet provided many details about its future foreign-policy plans regarding Afghanistan. However, he stressed that Uzbekistan will continue its constructive approach toward Afghanistan.
The Uzbek president made these remarks at a time when trade, transit, and economic relations between Kabul and Tashkent have expanded in recent years.
He also said that the poverty rate in Uzbekistan has fallen from 35 percent to 4 percent.
