Summary

The latest official statistics from the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that the name “Muhammad” has remained the most popular name for newborn boys in England and Wales for the third consecutive year. According to the figures, “Muhammad” was registered for 5,957 baby boys in 2025, placing it in first position by a margin of nearly 2,000 registrations.

According to the report, published on Thursday, 18 Saratan, the names “Noah” and “Leo” ranked as the second and third most popular boys’ names in 2025. The names “Muhammad” and “Noah” have retained the top two positions since 2023, although the gap between them widened last year.

The Office for National Statistics stated that the rankings were compiled using official birth registration data from 2025. The organisation calculates name rankings based on the exact spelling recorded at birth; therefore, alternative spellings of “Muhammad” are counted separately in the statistics.

For girls’ names, “Olivia” retained its position as the most popular name for newborn girls in England and Wales for the tenth consecutive year. It was followed by “Lily” and “Amelia,” which ranked second and third respectively.

Other names including “Isla,” “Florence,” “Freya,” “Poppy,” “Elsie,” “Ivy,” and “Isabella” also featured among the top 10 most popular girls’ names in 2025. These figures were compiled and published based on official birth registration data from England and Wales.
