Montreal police announced that an armed man opened fire on officers near the Hilton Hotel on Monday using what authorities described as a military-style rifle. The incident escalated into a gun battle between police officers and the assailant.
According to police, Officer Mohamed Lamine Ben Redouane, a 34-year-old member of the Montreal Police Service, was killed during the exchange of gunfire. Another officer sustained serious injuries and was transported to a medical center for treatment.
Police officials also stated that a civilian was killed in the incident. The gunman was fatally shot during the confrontation with security forces.
Fady Dagher, Montreal’s police chief, described the incident as a “nightmare” and said it was the first time in 24 years that a Montreal police officer had been killed in the line of duty.
Eyewitnesses reported that dozens of rounds were fired during the shootout, and security forces quickly cordoned off the area. Videos shared on social media appear to show scenes of the exchange of gunfire between police and the armed suspect.
Canadian authorities said the investigation into the gunman’s motive is ongoing. However, following preliminary assessments, security agencies stated that the incident is not being classified as a terrorist attack.
