Demand for Arabic and expensive perfumes has increased in Kabul, particularly in the Shahr-e Naw and Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan areas, where the number of perfume shops has also grown significantly.
Perfume sellers say that some Taliban officials and members are among the main customers for high-end and expensive Arabic fragrances, particularly oud perfumes, and are willing to pay high prices for certain exclusive fragrances.
According to shopkeepers, in addition to perfumes, the market for turbans and wristwatches has also become increasingly active in Kabul.
Kamal, a perfume seller in Kabul, says people have a strong interest in perfumes, turbans and similar products, and that sales and trade in these goods have increased considerably.
According to available information, more than 12 perfume shops operate in Kabul’s Shahr-e Naw area alone, while more than 20 perfume stores are active in the Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan area. These shops sell a variety of Arabic and international fragrances.
Another perfume seller, Omid, says his shop also stocks international brands imported from Dubai, Kuwait, France and other countries.
Meanwhile, a Kabul resident says the perfumes sold at these shops are of high quality, which has contributed to their popularity among customers.
This comes as much of Afghanistan’s population continues to face severe economic hardship and declining purchasing power. Nevertheless, the market for luxury goods such as expensive perfumes, turbans and wristwatches remains notably active in Kabul.
