Summary

Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban’s spokesperson, says that recent security incidents and unrest in Badakhshan have been brought under control and that Taliban security forces have the full capacity to manage the situation in the province.

In response to a recent report by the International Crisis Group, Mujahid described the recent activities in Badakhshan as “minor movements and violations.” He said Taliban forces had succeeded in bringing the situation in the province under control.

The Taliban spokesperson once again emphasized that no country should be concerned about potential threats emanating from Afghan territory.

In its latest report, the International Crisis Group said that five years after the Taliban’s return to power, fighting and overall violence in Afghanistan have declined and the Taliban’s central control remains strong. However, the report said the Taliban government continues to face several serious challenges. It specifically highlighted increased militant activity and growing local discontent in northern Afghanistan, particularly in Badakhshan.

Mujahid’s remarks come as reports of insecurity and armed clashes in Badakhshan continue to emerge almost daily. On Sunday, the National Resistance Front claimed that it had clashed with Taliban forces in the Zibak district of the province.

Other anti-Taliban groups also periodically claim to have carried out operations and attacks against the Taliban in Badakhshan and other parts of Afghanistan.
