Sources say that Nawidullah Fitrat, a teacher who had criticized the Taliban, was arrested by the Taliban on Wednesday morning near Cinema Chowk in Herat city.
According to the sources, Fitrat was arrested by Taliban forces at around 8:00 a.m. The sources added that a family was also detained for hosting him.
A few days ago, Fitrat strongly criticized the Taliban in a video. He accused the group of “covering their ethnic objectives with a religious guise” and called on the Taliban to separate religion from politics.
He held the Taliban responsible for depriving Afghans of opportunities, disrupting social order, and establishing an authoritarian system. He also called on religious scholars to state their position on the Taliban’s actions.
In his latest video, Fitrat said: “This may be my last video, but before I die, I will speak the truth.”
The video was widely circulated on social media, raising concerns about his safety and whereabouts.
The Taliban have not yet made any official statement regarding Nawidullah Fitrat’s arrest, and the reason for his detention remains unclear.
