Uzbekistan’s State Security Service has announced the discovery and seizure of nearly 50 kilograms of narcotics that, according to the agency, had been transported from Afghanistan into the country.
Uzbek security officials said the shipment was discovered during an inspection of a cargo truck at the Hairatan border crossing. According to the officials, the narcotics had been packed into 98 packages and skillfully concealed in various parts of the vehicle.
According to the information released, the shipment contained hashish and opium. The packages had been wrapped in plastic and aluminium foil and secured with adhesive tape.
Uzbek authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the incident. The country’s security and investigative agencies are working to identify and arrest the principal organisers of the shipment, along with other individuals involved in the drug-smuggling operation.
This comes after Uzbekistan’s customs authorities previously reported the seizure of more than 52 kilograms of narcotics. That shipment was also discovered during a search of a cargo truck in the Saryq River area.
