Summary

Shahrzad Akbar, the former head of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, citing a recent report by the Rawadari Foundation, said that cases of severe torture and even the deaths of prisoners in طالبان detention centers are deeply concerning.

She described the situation as “unbearable” and warned that harsh treatment and torture in detention facilities, carried out without a legal framework, constitute serious human rights violations and could even amount to deliberate killings.

According to her, in prisons under Taliban control, especially intelligence detention centers, physical and psychological torture is in some cases so severe that prisoners lose their lives.

Shahrzad Akbar added that these detention centers have effectively turned into “centers of human destruction,” showing that there is neither legal oversight nor respect for humanitarian standards.

These remarks come after the Rawadari Foundation claimed in its latest report that in October 2025, a 19-year-old young man from Daikundi province died as a result of severe torture just one day after being detained by the Taliban .

Human rights organizations have repeatedly raised concerns in recent years about the condition of prisoners, torture, and the treatment of detainees in Taliban prisons and detention centers, calling for transparent monitoring of these facilities.
