The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has announced the appointment of Shane McDermott as the assistant coach and new fielding coach of the Afghanistan national cricket team.
According to the ACB, McDermott will join the national squad on August 1, ahead of Afghanistan’s five-match One-Day International (ODI) series against Ireland.
McDermott holds a Level 3 Cricket Coaching qualification and brings extensive experience in international cricket coaching. He previously served as Afghanistan’s fielding coach from January 2024 to July 2025.
He then joined the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), where he worked as the national team’s fielding coach from July 2025 to July 2026.
From 2019 to 2021, McDermott served as the fielding coach of the Sri Lanka national team and also coached the country’s “A” team. Prior to that, between 2012 and 2019, he held various coaching roles at Cricket Australia’s National Cricket Centre and with the coaching staffs of Australia’s national and “A” teams.
McDermott has also been a member of coaching staffs at several major International Cricket Council (ICC) tournaments, including the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup and the 2021 and 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cups.
