Summary

Mansour Hamza, deputy spokesman for the Taliban’s Supreme Court, says that 118,869 cases related to women’s rights have been addressed over the past five years.

According to him, during the same period, 12,976 cases concerning women’s inheritance and property rights were also reviewed.

Hamza said that 9,021 cases involving the collection and registration of information related to women’s inheritance are also under review. He added that 8,750 cases concerning the verification of women’s property ownership have been addressed, while 22,703 cases related to the processing of inheritance documents and associated judicial proceedings have been registered.

The Taliban’s Supreme Court said that inheritance, property ownership, dowry, maintenance, and other rights granted to women under Islamic Sharia are their legitimate and established rights.

According to the court, judicial institutions are required to examine cases related to women’s rights carefully and impartially, in accordance with Islamic Sharia and the country’s applicable laws.

The remarks come as international human rights organizations and United Nations agencies have repeatedly expressed concern over the situation of women’s and girls’ rights in Afghanistan since the Taliban returned to power.

International organizations say that restrictions on women’s education, employment, freedom of movement, and participation in public life have placed their fundamental rights under serious strain in Afghanistan.
