The mine clearance organization HALO Trust has discovered and safely neutralized a 500-kilogram bomb left over from past conflicts in the Wiyand village of Shah Wali Kot district, Kandahar province.
The Taliban’s Disaster Management Preparedness Authority said in a statement issued on Wednesday (15 July) that HALO Trust’s rapid response team discovered the FABe-500 bomb and, after securing the area, safely disposed of it.
The authority has urged the public that, if they encounter any type of mine, unexploded ordnance (UXO), or suspicious explosive items, they should avoid approaching or touching them and immediately inform the relevant security and responsible authorities.
According to the Taliban’s Disaster Management Preparedness Authority, 49 incidents involving mines and unexploded ordnance have been recorded in Afghanistan since the beginning of 2026, resulting in 30 deaths and 70 injuries.
The authority stated that during the same period, with the cooperation of partner organizations, 22 square kilometers of land have been cleared of mines and unexploded ordnance. However, 1,019 square kilometers of land across Afghanistan remain contaminated by mines and unexploded remnants of war and require clearance.
