Summary

The 9th session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on defending women’s rights and empowerment has commenced in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, with the participation of ministers and high-level delegations from member states. The session focuses on strengthening women’s social, economic, and political roles in Islamic countries.

The event is jointly organised by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and Pakistan’s Ministry of Human Rights. Ministers responsible for women and family affairs, senior officials, and representatives of OIC member states are attending the session to discuss issues related to the status and advancement of women in the Muslim world.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation has stated that the meeting is being held as a continuation of discussions initiated at the organisation’s 2021 conference in Cairo. According to the OIC, the objective of the session is to develop strategies and outline future perspectives for supporting women and expanding their role in Islamic societies.

According to the organisers, the main themes of the session include expanding educational opportunities for women, enhancing personal and professional capacities, increasing women’s participation in economic and environmental policy-making, and exploring practical approaches to women’s empowerment.

The meeting is taking place at a time when issues concerning women’s rights, education, employment, and social participation remain subjects of significant domestic and international attention in several Islamic countries, particularly Afghanistan.
