According to a recent report by international statistical and assessment organizations, the cost of hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is estimated to range between $8 billion and $14 billion.
The report states that these expenditures will be allocated to stadium preparations, security measures, transportation infrastructure, and the organization and management of the tournament. Experts note that because the three host nations already possess advanced sports and transportation infrastructure, the need for new construction projects is relatively limited. As a result, the overall costs are expected to be significantly lower than in some previous tournaments.
In contrast, the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar is widely regarded as the most expensive sporting event in history. According to several economic assessments, the total cost of Qatar’s World Cup reached approximately $220 , billion largely because major projects including stadiums, transportation networks, and urban infrastructure had to be built from the ground up.
Analysts say that differences in World Cup hosting costs are directly linked to the economic capacity of the host countries, the availability of existing infrastructure, and the scale of new development projects required. They add that the 2026 World Cup is expected to be more cost-effective and manageable from an economic standpoint compared to previous editions of the tournament.
