The Taliban, after a three-day delay, handed over the body of Hasib Panjshiri, a commander of Afghanistan’s National Resistance Front (NRF), to his relatives in Kabul. Sources said the Taliban had imposed two conditions for the release of his body: no slogans were to be chanted during the funeral, and no photographs or videos were to be taken during the ceremony.
On Sunday, 1 Sunbula, the Taliban transferred Hasib Panjshiri’s body from Charikar to Kabul. According to sources, his body is expected to be taken to Panjshir for burial.
Hasib Panjshiri, also known as “Hasib Qowai Markaz,” was a commander of the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan. He was killed on Thursday, 29 Asad, during clashes with the Taliban in northern Salang.
The International Committee of the Red Cross had previously attempted to facilitate the handover of Hasib Panjshiri’s body from the Taliban. However, the process of transferring the body took three days.
Following the killing of the NRF commander, a number of Afghan political figures and former government officials reacted to the incident, describing Panjshiri as an influential commander in the fight against the Taliban.
Hasib Panjshiri’s death also drew widespread attention among Afghans and social media users. Reactions to his death, particularly regarding the treatment of his body, have continued to circulate on social media.
Following his death, a video was circulated on social media showing a Taliban fighter pulling the hair of Hasib Panjshiri’s body. The release of the video sparked widespread condemnation.
The National Resistance Front of Afghanistan called on the United Nations to investigate what it described as the desecration of the commander’s body. No further information has so far been released regarding the possible outcome of the request.
