The Taliban have released 192 prisoners from Kandahar Central Prison and reduced the sentences of 384 others.
In a statement issued today (Monday, 2 Sunbula), Kandahar Central Prison said the prisoners were released to mark the fifth anniversary of the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan.
Mahboobullah Garmasiri, the Taliban-appointed head of Kandahar Central Prison, urged those released during a ceremony to refrain from actions that contradict “the principles of Islamic Sharia” and “Afghan culture.”
He also advised them to serve their communities in accordance with the training and education they received while in prison.
It remains unclear how or on what charges the prisoners were arrested, or the length of the sentences handed down to them by Taliban courts.
The Taliban have also released a number of prisoners from prisons in other provinces across the country to mark the fifth anniversary of their return to power in Afghanistan.
