Today, July 10, marks the first anniversary of the killing of Maulana Khan Zeb, a Pashtun religious scholar, nationalist politician, and a prominent advocate for peace. He was killed on the same day last year in an armed attack in the Khar area of Bajaur district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
On the occasion of his first death anniversary, several activists and social media users have dedicated the month of July to Maulana Khan Zeb, paying tribute to his struggle, ideas, and message of peace.
Maulana Khan Zeb held a special place among the people due to his outspoken stance against war, extremism, and violence, as well as his support for democracy and his call for a peaceful way of life.
Although one year has passed since his killing, the Pakistani government has so far not released any information regarding the incident or the killings of other Pashtun religious scholars and prominent figures, including details about the arrest of suspects, their trials, or the findings of official investigations.
Meanwhile, some Pashtuns and political analysts have linked the ongoing insecurity in Pashtun areas and the targeted killings of influential figures to intelligence networks and proxy militant groups. However, the Pakistani government has not issued any official response to these allegations.
Meanwhile, Manzoor Pashteen, leader of the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM), stated on the anniversary of Maulana Khan Zeb’s death that his martyrdom was a great loss to the struggle for peace and security, and that his ideas and mission would continue to live on.
