Summary

U.S. President Donald Trump has described the Nobel Committee’s decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize to South African jurist Navanethem Pillay as “disgraceful and shameful,” claiming that the decision has left an indelible stain on Norway’s reputation.

Speaking on Friday at an election rally in Syracuse, New York, Trump said his efforts to end the conflict between India and Pakistan and resolve the wars involving Iran, Russia, and Ukraine demonstrated that he deserved to receive the award.

Earlier, in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump had also claimed that he had brought eight wars to an end and deserved eight Nobel Peace Prizes. According to Trump, efforts to resolve two additional conflicts are progressing rapidly.

The U.S. president also claimed that he had prevented Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, played a role in securing the return of hostages from Israel, negotiated the release of political prisoners in Eastern European countries, and helped increase defence spending among NATO members. He further said that he was working to transform Venezuela into a democratic and prosperous country.

Commenting on Pillay, Trump said he did not know her and claimed that her opposition to Israel was one of the main reasons she had gained prominence. He also alleged that several leaders of countries he had helped had sent letters to the Norwegian Nobel Committee in support of his nomination.

In another part of his remarks, Trump said that María Corina Machado, last year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate, had given him her award and told him that he was more deserving of the honour than anyone else.

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the world’s most prestigious international awards. It is presented to individuals and organisations that work to promote peace, reduce conflict, and foster cooperation among nations.
