According to reports published by The New York Times and The Washington Post, John Ratcliffe, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), arrived in Moscow on Tuesday on an unannounced visit, a trip that was also confirmed by Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Russian presidency.
Reports indicate that Ratcliffe traveled to Russia aboard a U.S. Air Force C-17 military transport aircraft departing from Andrews Air Force Base. Before arriving in Moscow, the aircraft made a stop in Riga, the capital of Latvia.
Although the visit has been confirmed, U.S. officials have so far provided no official explanation of its purpose. The lack of details surrounding Ratcliffe’s itinerary has fueled speculation that the trip could involve confidential discussions between officials from the two countries.
The war between Russia and Ukraine is among the issues being cited in speculation about the possible focus of the visit. However, neither U.S. nor Russian officials have officially confirmed that the war was the purpose of Ratcliffe’s trip.
The visit comes as relations between Washington and Moscow remain strained by the war in Ukraine, as well as a range of political and security disputes. Further details regarding Ratcliffe’s meetings and the substance of his possible discussions with Russian officials have yet to be made public.
