The United Nations entity for gender equality and the empowerment of women (UN women) says that millions of girls in Afghanistan continue to be deprived of opportunities for education, employment, and determining their own futures.
In a post on the social media platform X on Sunday, August 30, the agency said that “empty chairs and empty desks” offer a stark picture of the current state of girls’ education in Afghanistan.
UN Women added that Afghan girls remain deprived of access to educational opportunities, a situation that has placed serious constraints on their future.
Restrictions imposed on the education and employment of women and girls since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan remain among the major concerns of international organizations and human rights groups.
The Taliban have barred girls from attending school beyond the sixth grade and have imposed sweeping restrictions on women’s and girls’ access to education, employment, and participation in public and social life.
