The U.S. Navy plans to deploy the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, carrying approximately 5,000 personnel, to the Middle East for a mission lasting at least seven months. If military hostilities with the Iranian government continue, the deployment could be extended to eight months or longer.
John Preaman, a senior enlisted officer in the U.S. Navy, said Wednesday, August 26, that the carrier’s commanding officer had instructed the crew to prepare for an eight-month deployment. He added that sailors also expect to remain away from home for more than seven months.
The Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group is expected to depart San Diego in the coming weeks and, upon arriving in the region, operate under the U.S. Central Command’s area of responsibility in the Middle East. The deployment will be part of a broader rotation of U.S. aircraft carriers in the region.
According to the U.S. Naval Institute’s news outlet, the Theodore Roosevelt is expected to replace the USS George Washington, which entered the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet area of operations last week.
The U.S. Navy has maintained an aircraft-carrier presence in the Arabian Sea since the launch of military operations against the Iranian government on February 28 of last year. According to published reports, the carriers have participated in strikes against targets in Iran as well as maritime operations in the region.
Meanwhile, the USS George H. W. Bush is also operating in the region. The simultaneous presence and rotation of U.S. aircraft carriers in the Middle East indicate that the U.S. military is preparing to maintain its operational capabilities and continued military presence in the region.
The deployment of the Theodore Roosevelt comes as the U.S. military presence in the Middle East remains shaped by ongoing security developments and regional conflicts. The duration of the carrier’s mission will depend on operational requirements and developments in the region.
