Summary

The U.S. Navy has ordered the removal of official photographs and biographies of commanding officers of its ships and installations from publicly accessible websites amid growing security concerns. Navy officials said that making such information publicly available could pose security risks to service members and their families.

According to Navy officials, publishing the biographies of senior commanders may attract unnecessary attention and increase online scrutiny, inadvertently exposing them to potential security threats. As a result, units commanded by officers holding the rank of three-star admiral or below will no longer be permitted to publish the official photographs and biographies of their commanding officers on public websites.

Commander biographies on U.S. Navy websites have traditionally followed a standard format, detailing officers’ educational background, military service history, command assignments aboard ships and operational units, staff appointments, summaries of operational deployments, and the decorations and awards they have received.

Official portraits typically depicted commanders standing before the flags of the United States and the U.S. Navy. Navy officials said the policy is intended to reduce security risks and provide greater protection for commanders and their families.
