Argentina advanced to the semifinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 3–1 victory over Switzerland after extra time in the quarterfinals. They will now face England in the semifinal.
Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring for Argentina in the 10th minute, heading home from a Lionel Messi corner. Switzerland equalized in the 67th minute through Dan Ndoye, forcing the match into extra time.
Despite being reduced to 10 men following Breel Embolo’s dismissal, Switzerland held on until extra time. After a VAR review, Embolo received a second yellow card for simulation and was sent off. The referee also overturned his initial decision to caution Leandro Paredes after reviewing the incident.
In the second half of extra time, Julián Álvarez restored Argentina’s lead in the 112th minute with a strike from outside the penalty area. Lautaro Martínez then sealed the victory with a goal in first-half stoppage time of extra time (120+1), confirming Argentina’s place in the semifinals.
Argentina will now face England on Wednesday in the semifinals. England booked their place in the final four after defeating Norway in extra time in their quarterfinal clash.
